A Trip to the Dealership for Routine Maintenance

Part 1 of 2

It happens every day: you take your car to the dealership for a routine maintenance appointment and you get approached by a smooth talking salesperson who says: "How would you like to get into a brand new car, while keeping your payment the same!?"

It sounds great… but what's really happening behind the scenes?

Here's the truth: it's financial sleight of hand.

The new payment may be similar, but now you are starting an entirely new loan and resetting the clock. You're just paying longer, or giving up the equity you've been building (because the dealership is underpaying for your current car...bigger profit for them).

Here's Some Napkin Math

  • You've been paying $595/month on your car with a 60 month loan.
  • You've got 18 months left. That's $10,710 you still owe.
  • Dealer says, "You've got a great car that we have buyers lining up for!"
  • The dealer put you into a new 60 month loan.
  • You leave the dealership with a new payment of $609, but now you have 60 more payments, instead of 18 payments.
  • But, at least you won't have to pay for those expensive oil changes and new tires that the salesperson is warning you about. lol, this is how they really try to sell it!

Every purchase is unique: depending upon how much time is left on the loan, and how much money was initially put down, it is very possible that the dealership could be convincing you into giving them a 5-figure profit. All while you think you are getting a brand new car for the same payment, with "little to no money out of pocket."

At Your Car Haggler, we flip the script. We focus on total cost of ownership, seeing past the manipulative payment tricks. We show our clients the whole breakdown, so they know what they are really paying.

When you are ready for a new or used car, we'll help you do it the smart way, not the dealership's way.
