Are Holiday Car Sales a Deal or Just Hype?
It seems like when a holiday is approaching, dealerships begin to roll out flashy ads for a one-day only or a weekend sale. This month it will be President's Day Sales, later it will be Memorial Day, or the Fourth of July, or Labor Day, or Halloween, or the owner's birthday (okay, you get it).
All of these holiday sales promise unbeatable deals on new and used cars.
Are these really the best deals of the year, or just a well-marketed illusion?
In short, it is all hype and marketing!
Car dealers know shoppers expect holiday sales, so they ramp up advertising to create urgency. However, the actual discounts may not be as impressive as they seem. Some tactics include:
- Limited-Time Pressure: Phrases like "TODAY ONLY" push buyers into rushed decisions.
- Inflated "Discounts": The price drop may look big, but dealerships likely add on extra fees and unnecessary packages during this time.
- Rebates That Sound Exclusive: Many holiday rebates from manufacturers are available all month (or longer), but dealers frame them as "holiday-only" to create urgency.
- Limited Options Available: Dealers often advertise a few cars at a great price, but they may be base models with few features, already spoken for, or unavailable by the time you arrive.
- "Going Fast!": Dealerships advertise cars at a low price point, but that exact car never really existed at the dealership.
- Overpromising on Trade-In Value: Ads boasting "up to $5,000 over book value" doesn't mean you'll actually get that much. It's often tied to buying an overpriced car, and/or has very strict mileage disclaimers.
- "Get a TV or a Vacation with Your Purchase": Some dealerships offer "free" perks to distract from a lack of real savings on the car itself.
How to Get a Real Deal
If you are in the market for a car, don't fall for the hype!
- Compare prices before and during the sale to see if it is a true discount.
- Check manufacturer incentives: they may be the same as what the dealership is claiming as a "dealer discount."
- Negotiate beyond the advertised price: you might save even more.
When you are ready for a new or used car, we'll help you do it the smart way, not the dealership's way.
